Patrol vs. Troop Positions – What’s the Difference?

Both are essential for developing different leadership skills and helping the troop run smoothly!

Patrol Positions – Small Team Leadership

Patrol positions focus on leading and organizing a single patrol (a group of ~6–10 Scouts who camp and plan together). These roles help Scouts develop close-knit teamwork and responsibility within their own peer group.

  • Examples:

    • Patrol Leader (PL) – Leads the patrol, assigns duties, represents patrol at PLC

    • Assistant Patrol Leader (APL) – Supports the PL and steps in when needed

    • Patrol Quartermaster – Manages patrol gear and meals

  • Goal: Foster teamwork, accountability, and shared responsibility in small units.

Troop Positions – Whole Troop Leadership

Troop positions serve the entire troop and often support multiple patrols or the overall program. These roles develop leadership skills that require planning, organization, and communication across groups.

  • Examples:

    • Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) – Top youth leader, runs troop meetings

    • ASPL, Scribe, Quartermaster, Historian, Webmaster, Troop Guide – All support troop-level logistics and mentoring

    • Troop Guide - Support all Scouts across the Troop, focusing on the younger ones

  • Goal: Lead, support, and manage troop-wide activities and operations.
